The number one excuse women, particularly black women, use for not working out is their hair do’s. I have girlfriends who want to lose weight but just don’t want to sweat out their hairstyles. While I understand the idea that a woman wants to look nice and have her hair intact, I also think that not taking care of our bodies is no longer an option. In other words, we’ve got to find a way to have lasting hairstyles and be active at the same time.
There seems to be a saving grace; an answer on the horizon. Nicole Ari Parker’s Save Your Do GymWrap, aims to provide women with a way to stay active and fit while maintaining their hair do’s.
“I was inspired by my own unbelievable ridiculous cycle of not working out because I wanted my hair to stay “done” looking,” Parker said. “My girlfriends all did the same thing. The surgeon general, Dr. Regina Benjamin, released a statement about the state of emergency that black women’s health statistics had reached. This statement set a fire under me. As an African-American, I wanted to really make this GymWrap at least a small part of the solution.”
The stylish wrap is machine washable and designed with open ties for a personalized fit. What’s more awesome about the product is that your money is going to a good place. Ten percent of the proceeds are contributed to Sophie’s Voice, a non-profit organization whose goal is to increase the quality of life for those living with spina bifida and raise awareness of its prevention.
I had to ask Parker about her workout routine. I’m sure all of you are wondering if the GymWrap really works. Here is her workout:
Monday: lower body workout
Tues: upper body
Weds: just cardio
“I work out a little bit 5 days a week. I do “splits” meaning I split the exercises up for different body parts.” She says that her hair is
nearly completely dry after her workout and then she just flatirons or curls and go.
What? I remember having to rinse or wash my hair after each workout when I first started exercising and my workouts were more intense.
I sure hope that this GymWrap would inspire those of you who haven’t been active to get in the swing of things. Your health is so important and worth it!
